How to Reduce Pregnancy Pain

To say that your body undergoes a number of changes while you’re pregnant is a bit of an understatement.  Unfortunately, some of those changes can be painful.  When you’re pregnant, you have to keep your use of medications at a minimum, so it’s good to know that many sources of pregnancy pain can be managed without medication.

Breast tenderness is very common during pregnancy.  The best way to reduce this pain is to wear a bra with good support.  If you’re used to wearing underwire bras, you may find them too uncomfortable to wear during pregnancy – if so, seek out a supportive soft cup bra instead.  Or, if you have large breasts, you may be more comfortable if you wear a bra to sleep in as well.

If your breasts increase in size rapidly, you could experience some pain in your shoulders and upper back.  The best ways to relieve this pain are to ask your partner for a massage, to do some stretching, or apply warmth, as in a hot shower with the nozzle aimed at your upper back.

Indigestion and heartburn also affect some women more than others during pregnancy. An old midwives cure for indigestion is to eat a few almonds, although this may or may not work for you. You should also be sure to stay hydrated and remain upright after meals.

Many women also experience abdominal pain known as round ligament pain. These are the ligaments that hold the uterus in place. As your uterus grows in size, these ligaments stretch, which can range from being so mildly uncomfortable as to be barely noticed by some women, to severely painful for others. The best way to reduce pain from the round ligaments is to avoid making sudden movements which stress already stretched ligaments.

In addition, watch your weight gain – gain an appropriate amount of weight through healthy eating, but don’t put on excessive weight. When you sleep or rest, lie on your side and place a pillow underneath your stomach to support it. This will also help keep the weight of your stomach from pulling on your back muscles and causing back pain. If you’re experiencing intense abdominal pain on the lower right, running a fever, having trouble walking or experiencing chills, your abdominal pain could be something more serious and you should consult your doctor.

Many women also experience pain in their lower back as their tummy grows. As mentioned before, when you lie on your side, place a pillow under your tummy to support its weight. You can also reduce your back pain by wearing a support garment designed for pregnancy that will help support the weight of your tummy.

The increased pressure of your uterus can also cause pelvic pain. To reduce this pain, try doing pelvic rocks, where you move the pelvis back and forth gently. These help lift your uterus up out of the pelvis and decrease the pressure and pain.

Finally, if you experience pain between your shoulder blades or just under your breasts – especially if it’s accompanied by indigestion or nausea – call your health care provider. This kind of pain can be associated with gallbladder issues, which occur in some women for the first time during pregnancy. Avoiding fatty foods generally helps with this type of issue.
